Aetheria Studio
High-Framerate Digital Showcase Powered by GSAP & WebGL Shaders
Overview
Aetheria Studio is an experimental digital design experience engineered to demonstrate fluid physics-driven micro-interactions, custom WebGL canvas vertex displacement shaders, and GSAP ScrollTrigger timeline choreography.
The primary challenge was achieving an authentic tactile kinetic sensation without triggering layout thrashing, scroll desynchronization, or draining mobile device batteries.
Through viewport-aware render loop pausing, batched GPU draw calls, and composite-only transform layers, Aetheria sustains a rock-solid 60 FPS across all hardware tiers.
The Problem
Modern creative websites frequently suffer from severe scroll jank, excessive CPU heating, and layout thrashing caused by unthrottled render loops and heavy DOM mutations.
- •Scroll desynchronization between native smooth scrolling and custom virtual scrollers
- •Uncapped WebGL animation loops draining mobile batteries even when off-screen
- •Complete lack of graceful fallbacks for users with reduced motion preferences
The Solution
We unified all scroll-linked transformations into a single ticking master loop and wrote custom GLSL shaders that execute vertex displacement directly on the GPU.
- •Viewport-aware WebGL sleep mode reducing idle CPU/GPU draw to zero
- •Strict translate3d GPU matrix composite layers with zero layout reflows
- •Automated detection of 'prefers-reduced-motion' substituting kinetic sweeps with high-contrast typography
Results & Impact
Proved that high-concept kinetic websites can remain lightweight, responsive, and accessible to everyone.
