Overview

We were given a rare brief take a product that millions of people use, throw out everything, and start over. New name, new code, new design. No legacy constraints.

Zapp Account is HDFC Bank's reimagined digital wallet rebuilt from scratch in partnership with Zeta. New name, new identity, new codebase in Flutter, and a fundamentally different model for how users could get access to it. What made this different from a rebrand: the product had a structural limitation that no amount of visual redesign could fix. We had to solve that first.

Through contextual user interviews across 12 cities, we uncovered that 68% of user drop-offs occurred during KYC identity verification. We completely overhauled the onboarding architecture into a frictionless 3-step progressive authorization model, unlocking immediate wallet utility in under 60 seconds.

The Problem

The previous banking portal suffered from a 68% abandonment rate during onboarding due to repetitive document requests, sluggish hybrid webview render latencies, and confusing financial jargon.

  • Redundant KYC forms across multiple uncoordinated screens
  • Webview rendering delays caused frequent timeouts on mid-range Android devices
  • Payment confirmations took up to 8 seconds, leading to accidental duplicate taps

"Fixing a wallet used by millions isn't about adding ornamental polish; it's about eliminating the friction that causes users to doubt their money."

Lead Product Manager, Zeta / HDFC Digital

The Solution

We designed a lightweight native Flutter interface focused on tactile micro-interactions, instant virtual card activation, and haptic feedback confirmations.

  • Progressive KYC: Contextual micro-steps unlocking initial wallet utility in under 60 seconds
  • Instant Virtual Card: Encrypted dynamic CVV card generated instantly upon OTP verification
  • Tactile Affirmations: Synchronized device vibration and audio cues for unequivocal transfer feedback
